Football of The (Not-So-Far) Future?

An offensive football coach from a small, but significant southern Georgia DII school visited last week and gave the inspiration for this IMOU500 blog, although, it just might take 1000 words or maybe another blog to explain it, as we could only do.

Lateral Plays GIF

Laterals and pitchbacks aren’t just for desperation anymore.

Our at lunch conversation shifted to an interesting subject, his words were, Syd,” football in the not-so-distance future will closely resemble Rugby meets the Run N’ Shoot, I mean it’s the ’82 Cal-Stanford ending….every play we run practically”.

As my sweet tea almost exited my nose, I looked at him and was waiting on the laugh. NO? “I am so serious, matter of fact, the most important player on a team will be the long snapper, which means the center position will become very relevant!” he explained, “My school has been playing this extreme wildcat shit matter of fact” he said. Keep talking, was my response, “Well, the offensive plays all 4 downs, if we are in the opposing territory especially and sometime if we are just close”.

…….” football of the not-so-distance future will closely resemble Rugby meets the Run N’ Shoot, I mean it’s the ’82 Cal-Stanford ending…. every play we run practically”.

Our quarterback plays what we call an extended shotgun called “the rifle”, a normal shotgun is 5 feet behind the center, we play him where the punter would normally stand We also use an abundance of lateral plays in the backfield. That’s where I stopped him. Why would anyone with a brain as a coach or offensive coordinator use lateral plays and besides, aren’t many of those plays illegal? Some, maybe, but we learn as we go, because there is no way the Ref can know, he would have to carry a rule book in his back pocket and that’s part of the show, his answer was astounding, “When you play what we call long field ball, it wears down the bigger D-line guys and have played games where they are huffing and puffing in the first quarter with their hands on their hips, so you can imagine how they are going to feel in the fourth!” Wait, wait.. so you’re telling me.. your team’s offense basically does a fake punt every play? Well, now that you mentioned it…..YES!, but they know it,… now stop us, was his answer. But, we have our WR’s play off the line 3 to 4 yds. and those guys are pretty much quarterbacks in their own right just to give you an example of what we do, they can be used as blockers, receivers, passers or running backs. We have 2 or 3 plays we run in the red zone called “jail breaks or an offensive blitz” where all the receivers go to one general area and it’s pretty much a Hail Mary or jump ball with our guys and the opposing team involved, that could be in the  end zone or the 50 yard line. My big question is, doesn’t that make the field longer for your team also?... and doesn’t that wear your player’s down? Not necessarily, you see, if we get a blitz from the linebackers, or secondary, that’s more field to cover than their D-line to cover, it’s as if they are covering two plays in one. It’s running 5 yards vs. 10 to 15 yards a play, it adds up, the stats of injuries and substitutions show and when you add in the lateral factor, it’s much more. When wanting to obtain someone’s area, the first thing you obviously have to do is lure them out of it, hence, into your field of play, besides, when playing this unorthodox mush even half the time, you still have your basic plays you run! Someone you see in costume the majority of the time is so much scarier and mysterious when they act normal. “We lead our conference in fumbles and interceptions, but our attendance and word of mouth is through the roof”. he ended

The standard football game, high school, college or professional plays the game North and South, and sometimes East and West by chance. Our concept plays it North, South, East and West by design, it’s coming. I know this sounds like Sci-Fi at its finest, my opinion to it is, you already see a version of it on Saturdays and Sundays, it’s just something that will evolve into more and more every year. The NFL has basically turned into the WWE with its characters, good guys and bad guys. Just do ‘ole Syd a favor and let the players make up their own mind about the Anthem please, Oh no, don’t get me started, but that’s IMOU500.
